The annual Early Detection of Cancer Conference is organised by Cancer Research UK, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and the Canary Center at Stanford to bring together experts in early detection from multiple disciplines to share ground-breaking research and progress in the field.
This year, our contingent of Oxford early detection researchers travelled to San Francisco to participate. The conference included sessions on
- How is biology informing early detection?
- Emerging technologies for cancer early detection
- Insights from Early Detection Trials
- Artificial Intelligence – promises vs. reality for early detection
Featuring OxCODE research
Seven OxCODE researchers presented at the meeting:
- Professor Jens Rittscher (Big Data Institute) gave a talk on the use of imaging AI to improve quality assurance, diagnosis and risk stratification.
- Dr Felix Jackson (Song group, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research) was selected for a lightning talk on “A rigorous framework for cell-free DNA tissue deconvolution by combining a deep learning classifier and conformal prediction”
- Dr Jingfei Cheng (Song group, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research) presented a poster on “A methylation and hydroxymethylation atlas of normal and tumour tissues”
- Lucy Denly (Kriaucionis group, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research) presented a poster on “Use of whole-genome urinary DNA methylation as a liquid biopsy for earlier detection of bladder cancer recurrence”
- Dr Yi-Jhih Huang (Vallis group, Department of Oncology) presented a poster on “Molecular Imaging for the Detection of Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal dysplasia and adenocarcinoma using a c-Met Specific Peptide”
- Ashley Jackson (Cancer Research Group, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences) presented a posted on “Positive MCED test results associated with subsequent cancer diagnosis in participants in the SYMPLIFY study”
- Dr Joshua Moore (Byrne group, Mathematical Institute) presented a poster on “Towards spatial hallmarks of cancer detection and treatment”
The next conference is planned as an in-person event in Portland, USA in October 2025.
