Oxford research groups are recruiting DPhil candidates for the funded DPhil in Cancer Science commencing in October 2023.

Studentships are available for the DPhil in Cancer Science Programme, funded by Cancer Research UK. These are aimed at clinical trainees, medicine undergraduates and non-clinical researchers interested in cancer research projects based in University of Oxford research groups.

There are several projects available with an early detection focus, including:

  • Modelling early ovarian tumorigenesis using fallopian tube organoids – Professor Ahmed Ahmed
  • Using big data and AI to improve early cancer detection using UK Biobank – Professor Naomi Allen
  • Understanding the hepatic immune and molecular environment in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma – Professor Ellie Barnes
  • Spatial resolution of the human transcriptome during gastrointestinal tumourigenesis- Dr Francesco Boccellato
  • Harnessing measurements of tumour metabolism and proliferation to improve the early detection of prostate cancer – Professor Richard Bryant
  • Multi-cancer detection testing in clinical practice – Dr Brian Nicholson
  • Bioinformatics and statistical approaches for the identification of genomic markers predictive of progression to B-cell malignancy using whole genome sequencing data from Genomics England – Professor Anna Schuh
  • Multimodal cell-free DNA epigenetic sequencing for early detection of pancreatic cancer- Professor Chunxiao Song
  • Non-Invasive Metabolic Imaging of Liver Cancer – Professor Ladislav Valkovič
  • Chronic infection, host immunity and cancer risk – Professor Ling Yang

All places are fully funded at the home rate, including salary/stipend, University and College fees, and a research consumables budget. International candidates are eligible but will need to source funding to meet the remaining fees. For more information about funding, see the Oxford Cancer website.
