The annual Early Detection of Cancer Conference is organised by Cancer Research UK, OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and the Canary Center at Stanford to bring together experts in early detection from multiple disciplines to share ground-breaking research and progress in the field.
This year, our largest contingent of Oxford early detection researchers travelled to Portland, Oregon, to participate. The conference included sessions on:
- From models to mechanisms to humans
- Emerging technologies for early detection and precision diagnosis
- Microbiological risk factors for early detection
- What is needed for an earlier cancer detection test to have clinical impact?
Featuring OxCODE research
Nine OxCODE researchers presented at the meeting:
- Professor Xin Lu, OxCODE Director chaired the session and panel discussion on microbiological risk factors for early detection
- Professor Simon Leedham, OxCODE Associate Director, chaired the session and panel discussion on models to mechanisms to humans
- Dr Joshua Bull (Byrne group, Mathematical Institute) gave a lightning talk and presented a poster entitled “Mathematical tools for spatial analysis of multiplex medical images”
- Ashley Clift (Hippisley-Cox group, Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences) presented posters entitled "Predicting 10-year breast cancer mortality risk to inform stratified screening and prevention: development and validation of statistical and machine learning models in 11.6million women" and "Predicting pancreatic cancer risk in people with new-onset type 2 diabetes: development and internal-external validation of the QPancreasD model"
- Felix Jackson (Song group, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research) presented a poster entitled “cfTAPS provides multimodal information for early cancer detection”
- Dr Eoghan Mulholland (Leedham group, Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics) presented a poster entitled “Caught in the act: Cell communities in colorectal dysplasia transformation”
- Masato Inoue (Song group, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Resarch) presented a poster entitled "Towards a human tissue and blood cell epigenetic map"
- Lauren Murphy and Jeanne Inchauspe (Psaila group, MRC Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine) presented a poster entitled “Detection of cancer cell-derived DNA in platelets improves the sensitivity of screening for pre-cancerous and overt malignancies”
The next conference is planned as an in-person event in London on 10-12th October 2023.
